Online cake school on its way!!!

Sculpting flowers with buttercream

Sculpting flowers with buttercream

Finally set to start filming a series of painting and sculpting tutorials which we will add to the website in the next few weeks!!

Filming will take place here, in my fancy new kitchen, and will cover everything you need to practice to become a skilled buttercream artist. I’ll take you through my favourite buttercream recipe, which is fantastically smooth and stable and completely delicious, and then I’ll demonstrate all the techniques I use to create sculpted and painted finishes.

Lessons will include printable templates that you can slip into plastic wallets and use to practice each flower. I’ll show you how to load the buttercream onto your palette knife to create different shapes; how to compose groups of statement and filler flowers; how to work on the side of a cake; mixing colours and creating successful colour schemes; piping flower spikes to create movement; and the more advanced way of working with two knives.

I’ll also share the resources that I use to create designs. Many of my cakes are based on or inspired by textile designs and couture details. What types of composition translate well onto a cake? How do you bring all the styling elements of a wedding together on a cake?

As soon as the classes are up and running I’ll send out a link. It’s VERY exciting but also quite nerve-wracking, as I’m not used to being in front of the camera. I’ll follow this series with a similar group of videos all about the very new art of sculpting with chocolate cream, which is firmer than buttercream and allows the creation of shapes with more volume.

Anyway I’ll keep you posted. Don’t forget to join the Facebook group Buttercream Cakemakers UK for a mountain of inspiration and advice; they’re a fab bunch of makers and you’ll get help with anything buttercream on there.
