Creative hen party ideas

If a drunken rampage through Brighton wearing L-plates isn’t really your thing, check out these ideas for a creative fix that you can enjoy with your girls.

Make your own flower crowns. I have done this at The Flower Appreciation Society’s beautiful Hackney studio (£45 per person including a glass of fizz) and it was the perfect pre to the drunken rampage I sounded slightly contemptuous of just now. If you plan your hen for high summer, you’ll be stuck for choice with all the blooms in season and you can wear your crown for the rest of the day. Hackney was a good location because there’s so much to go on and do in the neighbourhood, but lots of florists offer this experience. Make sure to ask your wedding florist if they do it.

Make floral cupcakes with me. I’ll come to you, or a venue of your choice, if you’re in the London area, and teach you and our girlfriends to pipe extraordinary flowers in my signature Italian meringue buttercream onto six delicious cupcakes, which they can take home. Price £55 per hen, including a glass of fizz and canapes. Brides who have ordered a wedding cake are free. Travel to venues in North London will cost extra. Ceramic painting. I know. But we’re not talking garden gnomes. The Crafty Hen offers fun pottery painting workshops in which you can create a tea set for the happy couple, a commemorative plate for the bride or a hanging decoration. They’re based in Bristol but will travel to a venue of your choice. A three hour session will cost around £34 per person.

The Crafty Hen also offers a cocktail ring making hen workshop, which looks like brilliant fun. They’ll bring an assortment of Swarovski crystals, beads and freshwater pearls that you can use to create a statement piece of jewellery. Learn beading techniques and how to construct rings using wire or pre-made bases in various styles and shapes. Each hen gets to take away more than one piece. A two-hour session costs around £34 each. Funktion Events offers a similar package from its London base.
